Relay

Broadcast from multiple stages

When a venue runs more than one stage, the feeds do not have to be separate broadcasts. Relay brings them together so one program can cut between stages.

Multi-stage programmes are usually produced as several separate feeds because that is how the venues are wired. Relay lets those feeds be treated as one pool of sources, so the producer decides what the audience sees rather than the cabling deciding it.

Common patterns

  • Alternating between stages during a festival programme
  • A single master feed carrying several rooms
  • Feeding a remote stage into the same control room as local cameras
  • Recording each stage separately while broadcasting one program

Name incoming stage feeds for the room they come from rather than for the route. A source called Stage Two Room is obvious to whoever is cutting later.
