Tune your image for the stage

Stage lighting is difficult by design. A few deliberate adjustments, made at soundcheck, do more for image quality than any amount of processing later.

Theatre lighting changes constantly, often within a single scene, and it is frequently far dimmer and more strongly coloured than daylight. A camera that looks correct in a bright room will usually look wrong on a dark stage.

The adjustments that matter most

  • Exposure, set against the dimmest part of the scene you will actually show
  • White balance, set under the stage's actual lighting rather than assumed
  • Focus, fixed for the distance the camera sits at rather than left running

Once these three are right, most footage is usable. Chasing perfection afterwards with processing usually introduces more problems than it solves.
